Time frame for Pahela Baishakh festival denounced

Dhaka – Prof Ajoy Roy on Sunday said setting any timeframe for the celebrations of Pahela Baishakh on the pretext of security is tantamount to a threat to the practice of the country’s own culture, UNB news agency reported. He made the remarks while addressing a press conference organised by Narir Jonno Nirapod Bangladesh Andolon (Movement for secure Bangladesh for women). Ajoy Roy, a retired professor of physics at Dhaka University, said various types of restriction imposed by police will diminish the spontaneity of the celebrations. Criticising the silence of the political leaders over the issue, he said this is the reason behind the increasing killing of bloggers and repression against women. Sharmin Murshid read out a written statement at the press conference. Cultural activist M Hamid and President of the Dhaka University Alumni Association Rakibuddin Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
