Tk.1.76 core fine collected from polluting transports

Barisal divisional office of the Department of Environment realised
Tk. 1, 76, 52, 275 as fine in one year from polluting transports as
against Tk. 2.81 core in previous four years.
Sukumar Biswas, divisional director of environment in Barisal,
acknowledged before the journalists that no drive was operated against
environment polluting transports.
DoE divisional office sources said Tk 5, 22,100 realised against using
banned polythene, Tk 14, 85,000 for operating illegal brick Kilns, 62,
00,000 for not using 120 feet high zigzag chimney in brick kilns, Tk.
50, 20,175 lakhs for supplying polluted drinking waters by without
renewing licenses, taking clearances and installing illegal water
purifying plant in last one year from June 4, 2012 to June 4, 2013.
Besides operating different types of short drives, mobile court and
task force they collected Tk. 44, 25,000 in last one year, sources
added.
Office sources said in previous four years they realized Tk. 1.52 core
in 2011-12, Tk.9 lakhs in 2010-2011, Tk.64.54 lakhs in 2009-2010, Tk.
37.93 lakhs in 2008-2009 and Tk. 18.03 lakhs in 2007-08 by operating
different types of drives, mobile court, and task force against
environment pollution.
Official sources said Tk 4 lakhs realised against using banned
polythene, Tk 59 lakhs for not using 120 feet high zigzag chimney in
brick kilns, Tk. 45.55 lakhs for supplying polluted drinking waters by
without renewing licenses, taking clearances and installing illegal
water purifying plant, Tk 35.25 lakhs under different enforcement
drives and Tk 9 lakhs from revenue dues in previous four years.
Besides operating different types of short drives, mobile court and
task force they collected Tk.1.29 in those four years.
DoE divisional director explained that they working amid different
types of limitations like administrative and judicial jurisdictions,
lack of coordination between different government and non-government
offices, manpower, transport, laboratory and equipment shortages.
Besides socio-political and vested corners often try to create
pressure on the department against operating drives and made the
department helpless or forced to engage in long legal battles
specially in cases of filling water bodies, cutting trees,
constructing establishments not biding environment pollution and
safety rules etc, the divisional director of environment told.
