Tribute to ‘Begum’ editor

I pay rich tribute to popular women’s magazine ‘Begum’ editor Nurjahan Begum who breathed her last on May 23, 2016. Late Nurjahan Begum was a lady of versatile qualities. When none was even familiar with the term ‘women empowerment’, late Nurjahan Begum started her noble mission to empowering women through publishing her elegant and sagacious magazine, the ‘Begum’. There is no doubt that Begum has greatly helped the womenfolk of our country towards conscientization. After her death, I remembered my late mother who was an admirer of Nurjahan Begum and bona fide subscriber of the Begum. As far as I can recall, I have been seeing the Begum in our house from my childhood. My father used to subscribe to one Bengali and one English newspaper. Mother’s weekly Begum magazine was at the top of the priority list. Before the Eid ul Fitr, mother used to remind our newspaperman to deliver the ‘Begum Eid Shongkha’ in due time.
I can remember reading a masterpiece serialized in the Begum-“Gaan geye elam chine” a travelogue by celebrated singer Ferdousi Rahman.
Our Nation is indeed grateful to this outstanding lady for her great contributions in the field of women development, art and literature. The government should take an initiative so that the Begum could continue its publication.
Yours truly,
