Two-day Jamaat hartal ends by and large peacefully

The two-day dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami ended yesterday. The lacklustre second day of hartal was marked by movement of more transports on roads in the capital.
Barring some stray incidents of violence the hartal ended peacefully in the city elsewhere in the country.
The Islamist party called the shutdown in protest against the death sentence awarded to its leader ATM Azharul Islam for his wartime crimes.Some pro-hartal activists who were passing in a procession hurled a petrol bomb inside a bus standing in front of Gabtoli bus terminal earlier in the morning.
At 7:00am, pro-hartal pickets brought out a procession at Dhanmondi-11 area.
Jamaat sources said that one Mainul Islam Sakib received gun shot injury while police open fire on the procession and police arrested another activist-Mamun.
Dhanmondi thana police however said that they have no such information.
A large number of public transports and private transports plied on the city streets. However inter districts buses did not leave Dhaka to avoid trouble on the highways.
Besides, movement of rickshaws, CNG-run auto-rickshaws were almost normal. Launch, train and air serves were also normal.
The Islamist party brought out processions in different areas in he city including Chakbazar, Nawabgabj, Bongsal, Badda Link Road and Sabujbagh.
Ramna thana Jamaat and Shibir activists tried to lay siege on the Mogbazar level crossing to stop movement of the trains to stop in and out from Kamalapur station.
The government has taken tight security measure to avoid possible untoward incidents.
Border guards and additional policemen were deployed at different strategic points in the city and elsewhere to ensure public security and fend off any untoward incident.  – Staff Reporter
