Two youths ‘confess’ to raping girl in running microbus

Two youths, arrested in connection with the gang-rape of a Garo woman in the city, confessed to raping the indigenous woman in a moving microbus in the city on Wednesday, claimed Rab.

“Both the accused confessed to raping the 22-year-old indigenous woman in a running microbus,” Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of the Legal and Media Wing of the Rab Headquarters, told a press briefing at the Rab Headquarters in the morning.Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Tushar alias Ashraf and microbus driver Lavlu early Wednesday for their suspected link with the gang-rape in the capital on May 21.

Tipped off, commander Mufti Mahmud Khan said, a team of Rab-1 launched a drive in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district around 1am on Wednesday and arrested Tushar.

Later, acting on Tushar’s statement, another team of Rab-1 conducted a drive in the city’s Banani area around 5:25am on Wednesday and detained Lavlu.

The law enforcers also seized the microbus used by the sex offenders according to their statement.

Earlier on Tuesday evening at least 500 Garo youths under the banner of Bangladehs Garo Chhatra Sangathan (Bagchag) gheroed the Bhatara police station inside the Bashundhara Residential Area under which the rape crime was committeed and a case lodged, for arrest and punishment of the rapists.

Little Drong, president, of Bagchhag and Pintu, APS to the state minister for Social Welfare, Rafiqul Islam, Assistant Police Commissioner of Gulsan And Nurul Muttakim, OC Bhatara thana were present during the thana gherao. The demonstration laster from 5-50 pm to 6-45pm.

According to the statement of Tushar, who has been working as a driver at Sigmet Buying House for three years, along with two African women went to a showroom of TextMart Fashion at JamunaFuturePark on May 17 where he got introduced with the Garo woman, an employee of the showroom.

Later, the Garo woman exchanged phone numbers with Tushar. On May 18, Tushar went to the Jasimuddin Road in Uttara, where the Garo woman used to live and gave her Tk 8,000 as loan.

Assuring the woman of giving a better job, he asked her to give her CV.

On May 21, when the woman went in front of the JamunaFuturePark for giving her CV, Tushar and his friend Lavlu asked her to get into a microbus, saying they will drop her to her residence.

Later, the duo violated her one after another in the vehicle and threw her on a road in Jasimuddin Road area.

Following the incident, she filed a case on May 22 against five unidentified people, seeking justice.

Rab handed over the arrestees to Bhatara Police Station on Wednesday evening. – UNB
