Some unidentified miscreants severed the tendons of a hand and a leg of SM Touhid Al
Hossain Tuhin, General Secretary of Rajshahi University (RU) Chhatra League unit on
Thursday night.
According to the campus sources, the incident took place at near Amir Ali Hall at around
10pm. RU unit leaders of the Awami League’s student wing have blamed the student
front of the Jamaat-e-Islami for the attack.
Instantly, Tuhin was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH). But he
was sent to Dhaka for better treatment around 12am.
Mizanur Rahman Rana, RU unit President of Chhatra League, said, “Tuhin was on his
way to Madar Bakhsh Hall from Amir Ali Hall when he was attacked.”
Shibir ‘miscreants’ came riding motorcycles out of nowhere and started hacking him with
sharp weapons. They also cut the tendons of his left hand and right leg at the time, Rana
said.
The assailants fled the scene after exploding two crude bombs, he said. Another Chhatra
League leader, Shamsuzzaman Shawon was also injured.
Rana alleged that Shibir had threatened Tuhin earlier for handing over several of their
activists to police when they were staging a showdown on the campus.
When asked, Abdus Sobhan, Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Police Station, told BSS that
they were yet to identify the attackers.
No case over the matter was lodged with the station until 3pm, he said.
He, however, says more than 15 suspected persons were picked up in connection with the
incident during the overnight raids in different areas adjacent to the RU campus.
Additional police were deployed in Rajshahi University after the attack on Tuhin. But
the situation was normal on the campus, said Prof Tariqul Islam, Proctor of RU. –BSS,
Rajshahi
