US embassy issues security alert for its citizen in BD

Dhaka, Apr 4 (UNB) – The US embassy here on Wednesday issued fresh alert for its citizen living in Bangladesh encouraging them to exercise heightened awareness of the ongoing threat posed by transnational terrorist organizations such as ISIS and al-Qa’ida.

In the statement, the embassy said, “In light of calls for revenge in the wake of the March 15 terrorist attack against two mosques in New Zealand, we encourage US citizens to exercise heightened awareness of the ongoing threat posed by transnational terrorist organizations such as ISIS and al-Qa’ida.”

Terrorist groups, their associates, and those inspired by such organizations remain intent on attacking US and Western citizens around the world, including in Bangladesh, it mentioned.

“Extremists may use conventional or non-conventional weapons to strike US interests, but many are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack to more effectively target crowds, including the use of edged weapons, pistols, and vehicles,” it warned.

Extremists are spreading propaganda online and calling for assaults on “soft” targets such as Western schools, businesses, and NGOs, it added.

However, in the warning the embassy mentioned that regular operations of office are normal.

It also requested its citizens to review their personal security plans as well to be aware of their surroundings.

“Stay alert in locations frequented by Westerners and monitor local media for updates,” it added.
