Van driver killed, several hurt in Noakhali AL-BNP gunfight

A van driver was shot dead and several other people were injured in a gunfight between activists of Awami League and BNP at Amishapara Bazar in Sonaimuri upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Zaber, son of Montajul Hoque of Seba village in Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur district and the sole bread-earner of a seven-member family. He had been living in Amishapara area for the last eight years. Witnesses said leaders and activists of Awami League chased their rival BNP men at Amishapara Bazar over a dispute on Thursday evening. As a sequel to the incident, BNP activists gathered at the bazaar around 12 pm today (Friday). On information, their opponents also turned up. At one stage, the both groups engaged in a clash when gunshots were traded between them, leaving several people injured. Zaber who sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight was taken to Noakhali General Hospital where doctors declared him dead soon after admission. The body was sent to Noakhali Medical College Hospital for autopsy. – UNB
