Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Iqbal Bahar on Sunday claimed that Wasim, who was arrested in connection with the murder of SP’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, directly opened fire on her. “Both the arrestees — Wasim and Anwar, hailing from Rangunia in Chittagong, are professional killers, and Wasim fired shot at Mitu directly while Anwar worked as a backup team member,” said the CMP commissioner at a press briefing at the CMP Headquarters on Sunday.
The arrestees made their statements confessing to their involvement in the killing, and a court recorded the deposition of the accused under section 164, said Iqbal. Replying to a question whether the arrestees have involvement in any political party, the CMP commissioner said, “They’re professional killers having no political affiliation.” Chittagong, UNB News Agency Reported.
Responding to another question, Iqbal Bahar said, “Additional police have been deployed around the residence of SP Babul Akter for security reasons and he was taken to the police custody for interrogation as a plaintiff and later he returned home”. Besides, five people, including a woman, were arrested in connection with the SP’s wife murder in the last four days and they have been kept at Dampara Police Lines.
Earlier, SP Babul Akter, who was picked up from his father-in-law’s Bhuiyan Para residence in the city’s Khilgaon area around 1:05 am on Saturday, was set free several hours after he was taken into police custody for interrogation to verify some information revealed by several suspects already arrested in connection with his wife’s murder.
Police arrested Wasim and Mohammad Anwar in connection with their suspected involvement in the killing of Mitu from different parts of the district on Saturday. Unidentified miscreants gunned down SP Babul’s wife Mahmuda Khanam at GEC intersection of the port city of Chittagong on the morning of June 5 while she went there to drop her son Mahir Akhter, 7, for his school bus.
A case was filed with Panchlaish Police Station of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, accusing three unidentified people after the incident. After his promotion as SP, Babul Akhter was attached with the Police headquarters in the capital for his posting several days before his wife was murdered.
