Weeklong tree fair begins in Faridpur

A weeklong tree fair, organized jointly by district administration,
District Agriculture Extension Department and District Social Forestry
Department, was Inaugurated here on Friday on Brahma Samaj Road.
DC of Faridpur Mainuddin Ahmed attended the inaugural function as the
chief guest with ADC (Gen) Md. Jahangir Hossain in the chair.
Inaugurating the fair, DC Mainuddin said an optimum afforestation
could help degradation of environment and biodiversity making the
country a safe habitat for all.
He also said that massive plantation can help reduce carbon emission
at a substantial level requires for restoration of clean environment
which has been greatly destroyed by indiscriminate felling of trees
and for building numerous infrastructures in the country.
Addressing the meeting, ADC Jahangir said that forestation checks
river erosion which is very much important in the context of this
district where river erosion is a recurring feature.
Among others, Awami League advisory council member SM Nurunnabi, DD of
Agriculture Bhaskar Chakravarty, Awami League leader KM Selim and
Divisional Social Forestry Officer Md.  Zahidur Rahman Mia addressed
the inaugural function.
Earlier, a rally was brought out in the town to create awareness among
the people for planting more saplings with the objective of restoring
ecological balance in the environment.
About one thousand saplings of various fruit bearing and timber trees
were distributed among the school students free of cost.
Different government, non-government organizations and nursery owners
set up 31 stalls in the fair displaying saplings of fruit bearing,
timber, flowers and herbal trees.
Sources concerned said about 1,66,000 saplings will be planted across
the district in the current year.
