Why jail term of suspended GCC mayor won’t be extended: HC

Gazipur, Mar 9: The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the jail term of sacked mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) MA Mannan in a graft case should not be extended.The HC bench of Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim issued the rule after hearing a review petition filed by the ACC.
The HC also fixed April 11 for hearing on the rule and the appeal petition filed by MA Mannan.
Advocate Khurshid Alam stood for the ACC while deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
The High Court also asked the authorities concerned to prepare the paper book of the appeal petition filed by MA Mannan by this time.
On November 18, 2020, a court sentenced the suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) to one year imprisonment in a graft case.
The court also fined him Tk 50 lakh, in default, to suffer three-month in jail.
The court also acquitted Golam Kibria of the case.
On June 23, 2016, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against the suspended mayor and another for allegedly swindling about Tk 50 lakh from the city corporation.
ACC deputy director Md Samsul Alam filed the case against Mannan and GCC accounts officer Md Golam Kibria with Joydebpur police station in Gazipur, reports UNB.
On January 12, 2017, the ACC submitted chargesheet against MA Mannan.
