Why Satyendra Nath Bose not given Nobel, asks Prof Heur

Director general of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) Prof Rolf-Dieter Heur on Monday said he often wonders why Satyendra Nath Bose was not given the Nobel Prize.
“Prof Higgs (Peter Higgs) together with Englert (Francois Englert) won the Nobel Prize as they predicted the existence of such a particle 50 years ago. I often ask the question why Satyendra Nath Bose was not awarded with the Nobel Prize. He did so many things,” Heur said. The CERN DG made the remark while addressing the 48th convocation of Dhaka University as the convocation speaker at the university’s playground. Yet he went on to say that physics itself had rewarded Bose, which in its unique way was greater than a Nobel.
Prof Heur, who was conferred with the Doctor of Science from DU at the function, said, “Of two physicists whose names are connected to the family of particles….one is Bose. So I think this is of much more value than a Nobel Prize.”
The scientist said, “The University (Dhaka University) has lots of connections, also with CERN. One of the connections is Satyendra Nath Bose. He’s a famous physicist and a world-known scientist. He’s the shining example of my field – particle physics.”
He continued: “He (Satyendra Nath Bose) lectured and did research here, if I am not mistaken for 26 years. It’s a matter of pride for you.” The modern world cannot be imagined without the contribution of science, said the DG adding, “We have to develop collaboration for the progress of science.”
A total of 8312 students, including 4015 male and 4297 female, received their graduation certificates at the convocation, held at the main university playground.
Thirty-eight researchers were conferred with PhD degrees, while 25 M Phil and 34 MD-MS degrees at the function. Besides, a total of 33 students received gold medals for their outstanding results. – UNB
