Wi-Fi on Dhaka road during T20 World Cup

Dhaka residents will enjoy Wi-Fi on busy roads during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup. The wireless Internet will be available from March on a three kilometre stretch of road from Jahangir Gate to Banani.
Advertising agency ‘Vinyl World’ is behind the project to bring the road under Wi-Fi along with its beautification. People while using the road can use free Internet with 5 mbps speed.“Basically we were assigned for beautification. Later we planned to bring the road under Wi-Fi access,” Abed Mansur, chief executive officer of the advertising agency, told journalists.
Both the projects are being implemented with our own funds, he said.
The Wi-Fi service will enable passengers on this road to use Internet when they get stuck in traffic snarls, Abed said.
Talks are on with several telecom operators and Internet service providers to provide the service, he said.
Those involved in beautification said road dividers from Jahangir Gate to Banani had been decorated with 64 murals of prominent personalities such as poets and litterateurs.
There will be 64 more murals depicting Bangladesh’s archaeological sites.
Fifteen major achievements before and after Bangladesh’s independence such as 1952 language movement, 1966 six-point charter, 1969 mass uprising, Mar 7, 1971 speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and liberation war and Mount Everest summit will also be etched on the marble.
Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur is the main venue of the World Twenty20 starting on Mar 16.
However, the Institute of Architects Bangladesh had described the beautification plan as a ‘waste of money ‘ and alleged it was in ‘bad taste’.
Abed Mansur said the project would end by the end of February and would be inaugurated beginning of March. -bdnews24.com
