Woman jailed for possessing heroin in Sylhet

A court here on Sunday sentenced a woman to eight years’ rigorous
imprisonment (RI) for possessing heroin.
The court also fined the convict Tonichha Begum, 35, wife of Babla Mia
of Musargaon village of South Surma upazila of the district, Tk 4,000,
in default, to suffer RI of four months more.
On March 9, 2007, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-9 after
conducting a drive arrested Tonichha along with 30 packs of heroin
from South Surma bus stand area, said the prosecution.
Deputy Assistant Director Abdus Salam of Rab-9 filed a case against
the woman with Sylhet Kotwali Police Station.
Sub-inspector Shahnaj Akhter of the police station submitted charge
sheet accusing Tonichha Begum in the case on March 25, 2007.
After examining the witnesses and evidence, Judge of Sylhet Additional
District and Sessions Judge’s Court Fahmida Qader delivered the
verdict in presence of the accused on Sunday. -UNB, Sylhet
