Independent lawmakers in the 10th Parliament on Thursday demanded allocation of three women reserved seats and chairmanship in the parliamentary standing committees on the basis of their proportionate representation.
The demand was made at a meeting of the independent lawmakers at the residence of Chief Whip Abdus Shahid with Haji Md Selim in the chair.
The meeting attended by 12 lawmakers decided to form a separate group of independent MPs with Haji Md Selim, who has been elected from Dhaka-7, as its president.
The meeting chose Raji Mohammad Fakhrul of Comilla-4 as member secretary of the four-member committee while Rustom Ali Faraji from Pirojpur-3 and Quamrul Ashraf Khan from Narsingdi-2 as vice presidents.
Meeting sources said the committee would inform the Election Commission (EC) that they would nominate candidates against women reserved seats.
It may be mentioned that a total of 16 independent candidates have been elected MPs in the January 5 general elections.
