World’s first Gen 3+ nuke unit goes into run in Russia

Dhaka – The newest power unit no. 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (power unit no. 6 of Novovoronezh NPP) with 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactor has been put into commercial operation on February 27, 2017. This is the reference project of the under construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and is the most powerful nuclear unit in Russia at the moment. The Russian Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostekhnadzor) had recently certified that project documentation of the commissioned plant meets technical rules and regulations as well as the energy efficiency requirements.
The unit was first connected to the Russian grid and started the electricity generation on 5 August 2016. Testing was successfully completed on February 23, 2017 after 15- day performance testing at 100% capacity.
Design of generation 3+ power unit includes the most powerful type of VVER reactor with a capacity of 1200 MW, as well as a high-speed turbine specially designed for new-generation NPPs. It provides a unique combination of active and passive safety systems and fully meets all post-Fukushima requirements set by the IAEA. Main features of Generation 3+ reactors include a double containment shell of the reactor hall and a core catcher located under the reactor vessel, physical protection against natural disasters, industrial accidents and other emergencies, Passive residual heat removal system enabling sustained heat removal from the reactor core in the absence of any power sources among others.
Bangladesh will have their first ever nuclear power plant at Rooppur of Pabna. Being constructed with Russian assistance it will have two power units with Generation 3+ VVER reactors, each with a capacity of 1200 MW. The first of two units is expected to go into operation in 2023, the second in 2024. Triune Group press release
