Writ challenges reserved seats for women

A writ has been filed challenging legality of the 17th amendment to the Constitution which extended the tenure of 50 parliamentary seats reserved exclusively for women for 25 years more.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ on Tuesday. The petitioner also sought issuance of a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why 17th amendment would not be declared contradictory to the Constitution.
Cabinet secretaries, Law Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs secretary and two others have been made respondents to the rule.
The 17th amendment to the constitution is illegal and contradictory to sections 7, 11,19,26,27,28,31,32 and 65 of the constitution, said the petitioner.
The parliament on July 8 unanimously passed a bill to extend the tenure of the 50 parliamentary seats reserved exclusively for women for 25 more years.
