Zia Charitable Trust graft case: Charges taken into contingence

A Dhaka court on Tuesday took the charges brought against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia into contingence and issued an arrest warrant against her former political secretary Harris Chowdhury.

Judge of Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court M Zahirul Haque passed the order after taking depositions from both the prosecution and defense for one hour and 25 minutes in presence of Khaleda.

Earlier in the afternoon, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia appeared in the court afternoon in connection with Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

On January 6, the court deferred the hearing on acceptance of charge sheet against Khaleda Zia in the case till January 15.

On January 16 in 2012, the Anti-Corruption Commission submitted charges against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and three others, accusing them of abusing power.

On December 08, in 2011, Khaleda secured anticipatory bail for eight weeks in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.

According to the case statement, the accused persons “amassed Tk 2.86 crore for establishing Zia Charitable Trust abusing power” during the then BNP-led four-party alliance government.

Besides, on July 3 in 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Ramna Thana, amid a massive anti-graft drive under state of emergency, accusing the ex-PM and BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2 crore from the Zia Orphanage Trust fund.banglanews24.com
