At least 300 shanties were gutted in the Kallyanpur’s Natun Bazar slum fire in Dhaka Wednesday, but no casualties took place, police said.

The fire erupted around 11:00am, Fire Service spokesperson Nilufar Yeasmin told bdnews24.com.

Five fighters doused the flames after almost one hour of efforts, she said.

Mirpur Police Station Officer in-Charge Salahuddin Khan told bdnews24.com that there were some 3,000 shanties in the slum built on the government land.

No casualties were reported, he said.

However, neither the OC nor the Fire Service spokesperson could give the exact reason for the fire or the extent of losses.

Locals said the slum had fallen prey to another fire some years back. “That is why many know this slum as ‘Pora Bosti’ (burnt slum).”

On Feb 3, Agargaon slum in Dhaka was on fire gutting over 500 shanties. Another fire on Jan 21 gutted 40 shanties and 25 rickshaws in capital’s Hazaribagh.

Eleven casualties were also reported in the fire on Nov 18 last year in Hazaribagh’s Bou Bazar slum.bdnews24.com
