Police-Villagers clashes kill 5 in two districts

Five people were kiled and at least one hundred others injured by bullets in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj districts on Friday as police met in clashes with villagers after they went to arrest opposition activists accused of hartal violence.At least three people were killed and over 50 others injured in a clash between the law enforcers and Jamaat-Shibir men in Shyampur area under Shibganj upazila early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Oliullah, Matiur of Gopalnagar village and Robiul of Babupur village.
Locals said the clash erupted at about 3 am when police started raiding different houses of area to arrest the accused in a case of arson in Palli Bidyut Samity office.
At one stage, the law-enforcers opened fire when villagers encircled them, leaving three people dead on the spot and more than 50 others injured.
After the incident, Jamaat-Shibir men put barricade on Chapainawabganj-Sona Mosjid road.
Later, additional police, Rab and BGB members have been deployed in the area.
Chapainawabganj ASP circle Motiur Rahman said, “Jamaat-Shibir men along with the villagers launched attack on police early Friday when the law enforcers went to Shyampur to arrest accused.”
He said he was not informed about the casualty.
At least two people were reportedly killed and 30 others injured in a clash between BNP-Jamaat men and police in Belkuchi area of the district on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Yunus Hossain, 17, a Chhatra Dal activist and Faridul Islam, 25, a Juba Dal activist.
Witnesses said police on Friday morning raided the area in order to arrest the accused in a case filed for vandalizing local Awami League Office.
But, the leaders and activists of local BNP-Jamaat attacked police while they were conducting the arrest operation.
At one stage, the ruling party men rushed in and resisted the opposition men that triggered a clash between BNP-Jamaat men and AL-Cop at about 11am, leaving more than 30 people injured on both side.
Later, Yunus and Faridul died on the way to hospital, claimed central BNP executive committee member Amirul Islam Alim.
Belkuchi Thana OC Mizanur Rahman confirmed about the clash. However, he denied any casualty.
Police fired few rounds of tear shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control during the clash, said police.
Additional police force has been deployed in the area soon after the incident.
