The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Sunday urged the residents to
celebrate the New Year’s Eve ‘with the family at home’ in an apparent
attempt to avert rowdy revelling.
DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed made the call at a press conference at
the media centre. He also urged the residents to make sure that the
New Year’s Eve celebrations do not cause sufferings to others.
The city police chief said ‘unprecedented’ security measures manned by
police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel will be in place to
prevent unwanted incidents during the 31st Dec night celebrations.
He said diplomatic zones of Gulshan, Baridhara and Banani and Dhaka
University campus, a hotspot, from 7pm on Monday to 5am on Tuesday
will be out of bounds to outsiders. “There would be special security
arrangements for these areas.”
Traffic at Dhaka University, Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara areas would
also be restricted.
Many other city roads and areas, including Phoenix crossing in Tejgaon
Industrial Area, Amtoli crossing, Kakoli crossing, DOHS
Baridhara-United Hospital crossing and Natun Bazar crossing to enter
Gulshan, Baridhara and Banani, will be off-limits.
Commissioner Ahmed said to enter Dhaka University campus, people can
use Shahbagh crossing, Old High Court crossing, Dhaka Medical College
and Hospital emergency department crossing and Nilkhet crossing.
He urged Dhaka dwellers not to explode crackers. Security has been
ramped up also in 25 posh hotels and clubs in the city. All the
roadside bars have been asked to remain shut from Monday evening to
stop people from going overboard .
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com that
eight mobile courts would be deployed in the capital to maintain law
and order.
The DMP Commissioner urged the city dwellers to distribute winter
clothes among the poor and destitute as shivering cold weather is
sweeping across the country.
