1 to die, 2 get jail terms for killing Keraniganj boy

Dhaka – A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and two other people to separate jail terms for killing a minor boy after abduction in Keraniganj.The condemned convict, Khorshed Alam, was tried in absentia. The court also fined him Tk 20,000.The court sentenced Mehedi Hasan Shamim to 10 years’ imprisonment and his sister Mitu Akter to one year’s imprisonment.It also fined Tk 5,000 to Mitu and granted bail to her following a petition filed by her lawyer.According to the prosecution, Abdullah, 11, son of expatriate Badal Hossain, was kidnapped by his neighbours on January 29, 2016. The kidnappers demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom from his father and managed to realise Tk 2 lakh from the family.On February 2 last year, police recovered the body of Abdullah from the house of Motahar.Motahar made confessional statement before a court that they strangulated the boy to death after abduction. Police arrested Motahar’s son Mehedi, Mitu and their mother Nasima Begum in this connection.Meanwhile, Motahar, the prime accused in the case, was killed in a shootout with members of Rapid Action Battalion on February 8, 2016.Police submitted charge-sheet against four people on March 9, 2016.After examining the records and 20 witnesses, Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka Syed Ahmed handed down the verdict acquitting Nasima as allegation brought against her could not be proved.UNB news agency
