At least 10 people were injured in a clash between activists of the opposition BNP and ruling Awami League (AL) and police in Pirganj upazila on Thursday.
Police arrested nine people, including upazila unit Swechchhasebak Dal president Abdul Hannan and general secretary Shahjahan Ali, from the spot.
Witnesses said the clash erupted as the AL activists chased the opposition activists while they were trying to block the Rangpur-Bogra Highway in the upazila headquarters, triggering a clash in the morning.
Earlier, the opposition activists hurled 3 to 4 crude bombs at the Upazila Parishad office but none was reported injured in the blast.
Police intervened charging baton and firing about 20 teargas shells, leaving 10 people, including BNP central committee member and former lawmaker Nur Mohammad Mondol, injured.
Meanwhile, the Jamaat-Shibir activists threw a crude bomb targeting a police van at Modern crossing on the city outskirts but none was injured in the explosion.
Police fired two rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the Jamaat-Shibir activists, said Shahbuddin Khalifa, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station. –UNB, Rangpur
