In a prompt action, police rescued 10 of the 21 fishermen kidnapped by pirates along with two trawlers from the Meghna River under Monpura upazila early Wednesday.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Monpura Police Station Khalilur Rahman said the buccaneers belonging to ‘Kamal Bahini’ swooped on the trawlers in Balur Char area in the early hours while the fishermen were catching fish.
When the fishermen tried to resist the bandits, they fired gunshots indiscriminately, creating panic in the area and leaving fisherman Bagon Ali, 40, injured.
Later, the hoodlums kidnapped 21 fishermen along with two trawlers.
On information, police conducted a drive in nearby Tengrar Char area in the morning and rescued 10 fishermen confined to a house, said the OC.
However, the pirates managed to flee the spot along with the rest fishermen sensing the presence of law enforcers.
Bagon was admitted to Charfasson Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition.
