10,000 fishing boats sail into Bay after 15-day ban to save hilsa

Chittagong – After end of prohibition period over Hilsa fishing, about 700 fishing boats sailed for sea for fishing on first day on Saturday. The prohibition period ended at 12 midnight on Friday.
Feringhee Bazar fish market sources said about 700 fishing boats sailed from different points of karnaphuli river for fishing from morning of Saturday but experienced acute shortage of ice.Because of shortage of ice bars in the market, a numbers of fishing boats could not sail into the Bay in due time. District fisheries Officer Pravati Dev said that there were only 15 day prohibition over hilsa fishing but no fishing boats were allowed to sail for fishing.
The fishing boats owners samity President Babul Sarkar said that there are about 10 thousand fishing boats in Chittagong but due to ban of hilsa fishing, they did not sail for the last 15 days. He said about 300 fishing boats left for fishing on Friday night and 400 others left on Saturday afternoon. A number of boats are waiting in fishery ghat for procuring ice blocks, sources said. – A Coreespondent
