Garment village at Bangladesh’s Port City soon, says Mayor

Chittagong – The newly elected office bearers and leaders of BGMEA, Chittagong chapter called on city mayor AJM Nasiruddin at his office chamber on Saturday. The BGMEA team headed by the newly elected first vice President Moinuddin Ahmed Minto greeted city mayor by presenting a bouquet.
The new first vice President Moinuddin Ahmed apprised the Mayor of the present situation of the garment sector in chitagong. He said at the very inception of the emergence of garments industries in the country, 40 percent garment exports were from Chittagong but now it declines to only 9 percent of total exports.He said to overcome this situation, there is no alternative of setting up a garment village. The leaders of BGMEA sought cooperation to establish a garment village on unused city corporation land measuring 12 acres at Kalurghat area in city aimed at sustaining the old reputations of RMG exports from Chittagong.
Besides, they also proposed small types of garment villages may be set up at different khas lands at Sagarika area. City Mayor gave patient hearings to the proposals of BGMEA leaders and assured them of his best efforts to establish the proposed garment villages in the port city.
Among others BGMEA Directors Syed Md. Tanveer, selim Rahman, former first vice president Shahabuddin Ahmed, former Director Helaluddin chowdhury, newly elected vice president Md.Ferdous, Director Kazi Mahbub, Md. Saifullah, Amjad Hossain chowdhury, former Director SM Sajedul Islam were present during the courtesy call with City Mayor, sources said. – A Correspondent
