Joint force in separate drives arrested 12 activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami from four upazilas of the district on Tuesday midnight on suspicion of their involvement in violence and sabotage acts.
Superintendent of Police Sazid Hossain of the district said a team of the joint force, comprising members of police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh, conducted an all-out drive in Sundarganj, Palashbari, Saghata and Sadullahpur upazilas at midnight and arrested the 12 people.
Among the arrestees, six are from Sundarganj and two each from Palashbari, Saghata and Sadullahpur upazilas.
They were held on charges of involvement in post-election violence and vandalism and subversive activities during the recent hartal and blockade programmes of the 18-party opposition alliance in the district. -UNB, Gaibandha
