Dhaka – A court here on Monday sentenced 13 people to death for killing a man in 1995 in Gazipur.The condemned convicts are Falan, Sadir Ali, Kadir, Kalam, Bajit, Aziz, Osman, Abdus Samad, Humayun, Rustom, Faruk, Manik and Alam of Ishwarpur village in Kaliganj upazila.
Six of them — Kadir, Kalam, Bajit, Osman, Humayun and Rustom — were tried in absentia.The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each.
According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Billal Hossain Bilu, a worker of National Jute Mills of Kaliganj and also an accused in a case filed over the murder of former Jatiya Party MP Anwara Begum’s husband, over a trifling matter on December 7, 1995.
A case was filed with Kaliganj Police Station. Police submitted charge-sheet against 13 people.After examining all the records and witnesses, Gazipur additional district and sessions judge Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict.UNB
