17 cops hurt in Sylhet clash over grabbing water body

Seventeen policemen were injured in a clash between local people and police over taking possession of a water body illegally in Thubri Shilchand area of Goainghat upazila on Saturday early morning.The injured include Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Goainghat police station.Police said Monaf and Raj Mohan (current lease holder) had long been at loggerheads over the lease of the water body in Thubri Shilchand area.Police conducted a raid on Monaf’s house at Birkuli village adjacent to the water body around 3.00am, being informed that Monaf’s men were getting prepared to take possession of the water body forcibly.Monaf’s men swopped on the policemen, leaving 17 of them injured.At one stage, police fired 74 rounds of bullet to bring the situation under control.The injured policemen were taken to the upazila health complex.Later police detained five people, including a woman, in connection with the incident.A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident.Additional police members have been deployed to avert further trouble. -UNB, Sylhet
