17 leaders, activists arrested from candidate’s home: Bnp

BNP on Thursday night alleged that police detained its 17 leaders and activists from the residence of a party -backed counciillor candidate in the Dhaka North City Corporation’s Farmgate area.

In a statement, the party said that police entered the house of Tejgaon thana BNP general secretary, also a councillor candidate of Ward-27, Anwaruzzaman around 9pm and arrested 17 BNP men, including the ward unit BNP general secretary SM Nasiruddin.

It demanded the release of the party detained leaders and activists.

Anwar said a team of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police raided his house and election office and arrested the BNP men.

He alleged that the law enforcers also asked his wife to refrain from electioneering. Or else, Anwar said, police threatened to arrest more BNP men from the area.

However, Abdul Jalil, a sub-inspector of Sher-e-Bangla Police Station said they arrested eight BNP men from Anwar’s election office on suspicious that they may carry out subversive activities.

The detainees were taken to the police station, he added. – News Desk
