19 more killed in road mishaps in 8 districts

At least 19 more people were killed and 51 others injured in a series of road accidents in eight districts, including the capital, on Friday as roads across the country turned vulnerable amid monsoon rains.
The districts are Gazipur, Madaripur, Tangail, Sherpur, Dhaka, Gopalganj, Nilphamari and Sylhet.
In Gazipur, a head-on collision between a covered van and a human-hauler at Naujore in the city left five people dead and 12 others injured in the morning.Four of the deceased were identified as Saidur, 25, the human-hauler driver who hailed from Sherpur district, Sohel Miah, 27, of Galachipa in Patuakhali district, Moni Begum, 25, of Naogaon district, and Selina, 23, of Barolekha upazila in Moulvibazar district.
Local Highway Police sub-inspector Bahar Uddin said the Konabari-bound human-hauler from Chandana hit a covered van coming from the opposite direction in the area around 7:30 am, leaving three people dead on the spot and 14 others injured.
One of the injured died on the way to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital while another at the hospital.
In Madaripur, four people were killed and 20 others injured in a collision between a bus and a microbus in Melkai area of Kalkini upazila in the afternoon.
One of the deceased was identified as Rajib Das, son of Rabindra Das, hailing from Patuakhali district. All the deceased were passengers of the microbus.
Emdadul Haque, officer in-charge of Kalkini Police Station, said the Barisal-bound bus of ‘Mayer Doa Paribahan’ from Faridpur collided with the Dhaka-bound microbus on Dhaka-Barisal highway around 1pm, leaving four people dead on the spot and 20 others injured.
Vehicular movement on the highway came to a halt for half an hour following the accident.
Mohammad Kamal Uddin, deputy commissioner of Madaripur district, visited the spot and distributed Tk 10,000 for the burial of each of the deceased and Tk 5,000 for the treatment of each of the injured.
In the capital, a young man and a police constable of Special Branch were killed in two road accidents at Shewrapara and Karwanbazar.
At Shewrapara, Selim, 28, hailing from Tangail, was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus in the morning. He was a resident of Iqbal Road area of West Shewrapara.
At Karwanbazar, police constable Sohel Rana, 36, suffered injuries as a bus hit his motorbike around 2pm. He was whisked off to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 3pm.
Three more people were killed and 15 others injured in two separate road accidents in Mirzapur and Sadar upazilas of Tangail in the morning.
In Mirzapur, two people, including a woman, were killed and 15 others injured as a minibus plunged in a roadside ditch on Tangail-Dhaka highway at Sohaghpur.
The deceased were identified as Shahanul Begum, 30, hailing from Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha district, and Rokanuzzaman, 25, a resident Kishoreganj district.
Meanwhile, a bicycle rider — Selim Miah, 26, son of Siraj Miah in Sadar upazila — was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus on Tangail-Dhaka highway in Sadar upazila in the morning..
In Sherpur, two people were killed and four others injured in two separate road accidents.
In Gopalganj, a woman was killed as a bus ran her over at Singipara on Gopalganj-Tungipara road in the morning. The deceased was identified as Begum, 40, wife of Moiyar Ali Sheikh of the area.
In Nilphamari, tractor driver Ayub Ali, 27, was killed as his tractor overturned in College Station area of the town around 11am.
In Sylhet, a minor boy was killed as he was crushed under the wheels of a bus at Kaliganj Bazar in Biswanath upazila in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Monirul Islam, 6, son of rickshaw-puller Abul Kashem, hailing from Banshori village under Madan Police Station of Mymensingh district. He used to live in a rented house at Kaliganj Bazar.- UNB
