Dhaka – Bangladesh have touched a new low in their cricketing history, getting bowled out for just 43 in the first innings of the 1st Test against the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday.After being put in to bat first by Windies skipper Jason Holder on the first morning, the hapless Tigers managed to last all of just18.4 overs, ending on a total that earned them a number of dubious records (see below).
Windies pace bowler Kemar Roach was the wrecker in chief, ending with the quite remarkable figures of 5/8 off five overs, including the wickets of Mushfiqur Rahim, skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad – all for ducks.
It was a procession, once Roach had Tamim nicking to ‘keeper Dowrich off the last delivery of the 5th over of the day, with the scoreboard on 10. Liton Das [25 off 53b; 2×4] opened with Tamim for the first time, and on a morning that was over all too quickly, presented the only show of any resistance with a doughty 25 it turnwas the only double digit scorer for Bangladesh, was caught by Roston Chase off pacer Miguel Cummins on 34/6 in 13.2 overs.
It is Bangladesh’s lowest total in the format since gaining Test status in 2001, a good 19 runs short of their previous lowest (62) against Sri Lanka in 2007.
It is tied for the 6th lowest total in a Test innings ever recorded, with a South African side from 1889.
It is the lowest total ever recorded by any team in the West Indies, where Test cricket has been played since 1930.
As reported by Cricinfo, it was the second shortest first innings in Test history. Australia’s 60 all out against England in 2015 was top of the list before today by a long way. They made 60 in 18.3 overs.
It was the lowest total in any innings of a Test in the last 44 years – since India were bowled out for 42 against England.
Miguel Cummins (3/11) and Jason Holder (2/10) shared five wickets to tackle Bangladesh.
