A Dhaka court yesterday (Wednesday) sentenced two members of the banned Islamist militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death for killing a police informer in 2006.
Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka passed the order in presence of the convicts examining the records including the depositions of 16 witnesses.The death awarded convicts are Saiful Islam alias Russel, 29, son of late Kamal Uddin of Forazibanda in Bandar Police Station of Narayanganj district and Abdur Rahman alias Fahad Alal, 31, son of late Mokhlesur Rahman of Binodnagar in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur district.
The brief prosecution story says that, the two JMB men opened fire on law enforcers, leaving two policemen and police source Jaynal Abedin injured on December 29, 2006 as a team of police tried to stop a bus on Dhaka-Uttarbanga highway under Tangail Sadar upazila following a tip-off that disclosed, huge quantity of firearms were being taken to Dhaka from Meherpur.
Later, Joynal Abedin, son of late Lal Mia of Kabila Monirpur under Burichong upazila of Comilla district, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital while he was under treatment there on January 13, 2007. The Police arrested the two JMB activists for their involvement in the incident.
A case was filed with Tangail Police Station in connection with the incident. On July 4, 2007, Inspector (CID) Sankar Chandra Das submitted the charge sheet of the against the JMB activists.
Later, the case was transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 from
Tangail district and session judge’s court. – Court Correpondent
