2-month ban on fishing in Padma, Meghna begins

The government has imposed a two months’ ban on catching, selling and transportation of all types of fish from the Padma and Meghna rivers from Sunday to ensure safe spawning and protecting of fish resources.The ban will be in force in five fish sanctuaries of the rivers including Chandpur district.The Department of Fisheries has already carried out a massive campaign, including pasting posters and hanging banners, and is holding discussions with fishermen and the authorities concerned to make the ban fruitful, said the department officials. Mobile courts will also be conducted in the rivers and at marketplaces to ensure that none can defy the restriction. The mobile courts will award the offenders two years’ imprisonment in case of any violation of the ban.The government will provide 40 kg rice to each fisherman in four months from this month as an alternative source of living.
