28 Shibir men held in Ctg

Twenty-eight leaders and activists of the fundamentalist Jamaat-e Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir have been arrested in separate drives lasting from Sunday night to Monday afternoon in the port city of Chittagong.
Police said those arrested include Kotwali thana unit Shibir President Mahbubur Rahman, 28, and Lohagara Upazila’s Kalauzan Union Council unit Shibir President Shihab Uddin.
Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali Zone) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Abdur Rouf told journalists that Mahbubur Rahman was arrested from the city’s Andarkilla intersection on Monday around noon. The police officer said that there were eight cases against Mahbubur with the Kotwali Police Station in connection with anarchy and vandalism. Led by Mahbubur, the Shibir activists had committed several acts of violence in places under the Kotwali Police Station before the 10th parliamentary election.
Officer-in-Charge of the Lohagara Police Station Mohammad Shahjahan said that a team of joint forces, comprising police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members, arrested 27 Shibir men from different areas of Lohagara Upazila from Sunday night till Monday afternoon.
“After a primary scrutiny, it has been confirmed that each of the nabbed men is accused in more than one case,” the police officer said.
The Shibir men unleashed mayhem in Lohagara and Satkania Upazilas of Chittagong district after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in February last year sentenced Jamaat-e Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee for his crimes against humanity committed during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
A police personnel was also killed in the attack by the Jamaat-Shibir activists.
OC Shahjahan said that most of those arrested were accused in cases of violence after the tribunal verdict. – bdnews24.com
