Police have arrested four activists of Jamaat-e-Islami on charges of killing five people following an attack on the convoy of ruling party MP Asaduzzaman Nur in Nilphamari.The arrested Jamaat activists are Jamsed Ali, 50, Abdur Rahim, 55, Badshah Mia, 20, and Nur Hossain, 25.
They were arrested in a joint drive by police and RAB personnel from a village under Debiganj Upazila of Panchagarh district early on Tuesday, Nilphamari Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Babul Akhtar said.
The Jamaat-e-Islami supporters unleashed massive violence in Nilphamari Sadar on Friday following the execution of its leader Abdul Quader Molla.
The BNP and Jamaat activists attacked the convoy of MP Asaduzzaman Nur in Tupamari Union’s Ramganj Bazar area at the district’s Sadar Upazila on Saturday.
The ruling Awami League activists clashed with the BNP-Jamaat supporters at that time.
At least five people were killed and over 150 others injured during the clash.
Those killed were identified as Tupamari Union’s Krishak League unit chief Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, 55, Union Juba League’s Organising Secretary Farhad Hossain, 26, ruling party activist Lebu Mia, 40, Chhatra League activist Murad Hossain, 20, and Jamaat activist Abu Bakar Siddique, 42.
Police officer Babul Akhtar filed a case that night against 1,500 people, naming 14 of them.
