Kishoreganj – Ten individuals including four siblings have been awarded life imprisonment in the case relating to the killing of Manik Mia,33, who died in an attack by the rivals centring grabbing of land at Karimganj.Mohammad Abdur Rahim, Judge of First Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Kishoreganj, pronounced the verdict on Monday. The court also fined each of them taka five lac.
Besides, thirteen other accused were acquitted as the charge against them could not be proved.
Out of 23 accused, a total of 22 accused including 10 lifers were present at the court.
Those awarded life terms are: Manik, Badal, Noyon, Sujon, Alamgir, Mizan, Lokman, Gias Uddin, Rahmat and Mamun.
Of them, Manik, 37, Badal, Noyon and Sujon are siblings and sons of Abdul Hekim Baghu Male of village Palikanda under Gujaria union of Karimganj Upazila. The rest are also the residents of the same village.
According to the case statement, resident of village Palikanda Abdul Hekim Baghu Male had a long-time land dispute with Palikanda Government Primary School Assistant teacher Abdur Rashid.
Centring the land dispute, a supporter of Abdul Hekim Baghu Male started harvesting jute of Abdur Rashid of Palaikanda. At this time, Rashid’s men obstructed them but supporters of Hekim Baghu Mal swooped on them on August 6 in 2011,
Rashid’s nephew M Manik Mia who was critically injured in the indigenous weapon attack by the opponents was rushed to Karimganj Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased Manik Mia, son of late Abdus Shahid of village Palekanda, was a CNG driver in Dhaka. He came to his own village one day before the incident.
Meanwhile, M Khairul Islam, brother of Manik Mia, filed a case with Karimganj police station as plaintiff mentioning names of 27 people and 10-15 unidentified people.
After investigation, IO of the case SI Alam Kibria submitted charge-sheet in the court against 26 people on May 8, 2012. Three out of 26 charge-sheet listed accused died during trial.- UNB
