417 Jamaat men sued in Sirajganj

Two cases have been filed against 417 Jamaat-e-Islami men in
connection with violence in Ullapara upazila during Monday’s
nationwide daylong hartal.
Sub-inspector Asaduzzaman of Ullapara Police Station filed a case
against 32 identified and 150 unidentified Jamaat men on Monday night
while another case was filed against 35 named and 200 unnamed ones.
Ullapara Jamaat ameer Lutfur Rahman and general secretary Azad were
among the accused.
Police filed the cases against them on charges of attacking police,
obstruction police from discharging their duties, vandalising a police
vehicle and exploding crude bombs during hartal in the upazila.
Two policemen were injured when they came under the attack by the
Jammaat men. A police van was also damaged and at least 12 crude bombs
were exploded during the shutdown on Monday.
On Sunday, the ICT-2 punished the three Jamaat leaders—Hamidur Rahman
Azad, MP, acting secretary general of the party Rafiqul Islam Khan and
assistant secretary general of Dhaka city unit Selim Uddin for
contempt of court.
Hours after the tribunal meted out the punishment, the Islamist party
announced the shutdown programme.
