44 remanded over Chittagong intra-party clashes

A Chittagong court has ordered a day’s police remand for 44 people arrested in connection with Monday’s twin murders in the city as members of the Chhatra League and Juba League clashed over a railway tender bid. The Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Lutful Majid on Tuesday rejected the remand pleas for eight juveniles held in the same incident.
Police had sought a week’s remand for the 52 arrested people.
Kotwali police Inspector Nezamuddin told informed journalists about the court’s decision.
The clash took place near the railway’s eastern headquarters in the port city over bids for a Tk 4.8 million renovation project for the Feni Railway Station.
Two, including an eight-year-old, were shot and killed in the skirmish as the groups exchanged around 20 rounds of fire, according to the police.
Later, the police arrested 52 people in connection with the violence.
Among them were the Chhatra League’s central committee Assistant Secretary Saiful Alam Limon, Chittagong University unit’s Organising Secretary Alamgir Tipu, Cultural Affairs Secretary Jamir Uddin and Chittagong Commerce College Vice-President Hasmat Ali Russell, said Nezamuddin.
Kotwali police Sub-Inspector Mohibur Rahman filed a case on Monday night naming 87 people.
Nezamuddin said 35 of the accused were on the run. (Source: bdnews24.com)
