48-hour Opposition blockade from Tuesday

The 18-party alliance has called 48-hr rail-road-waterway blockade as first phase of their movement from Tuesday. Turning down the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, the BNP-led alliance on Monday called rail-road-waterway blockade programme from 6 am Tuesday.BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the protest programme at the chairperson’s Gulshan office immediately after the announcement of the polls schedule.
“The 48-hour blockade programme will begin at 6am Tuesday and end at 6 am Thursday,” Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader urged the government to suspend the polls schedule until there is a consensus between the opposition and the ruling alliance over holding the polls under a non-party government.
“Our movement against the government has taken a new turn with the announcement of the election schedule. This 48-hour blockade programme is the first step of the new movement. The further course of action will be announced in phases,” Fakhrul told journalists.
The BNP spokesperson urged the people of the country to join the movement and make it a success.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad in his televised address announced that the 10th parliamentary elections will held on January 5 next. – UNB
