Sylhet Correspondent

A 5day training programme on Rural journalists on Democracy and Human Rights issues for local journalists who want to build their career in journalism began in the city on Saturday.

News Network , a media think tank, arranged the programme in collaboration with UNDEF at Sylhet Pressclub in the city.

News Network Editor and CEO Shahiduzzaman inaugurated the programme and motivated participants to take journalism as their profession. , News Network Sylhet Co ordinator Muqtabis un nur also spoke on the occasion.

News Network Editor and CEO Shahiduzzaman Said,The rural journalists are particularly vulnerable to direct and indirect violations of freedom of expression. Since they practice their profession within small populations, where social relationships are very close, they become more conspicuous, and thus more exposed to the fluctuations of the regional politics. Also, considering they mostly depend on publicity for their operation, their economic precariousness becomes a weakness, which could be exploited for the benefit of institutions or officials seeking to obtain favourable information or to silence criticism.

Local journalists from different media outlets were also present at the programme and exchanged views with the participants on different aspects of journalism.

The training programme will end on 1 June with the distribution of certificates among the participants. A total of 20 Journalists are taking part in the training programme.
