5 fishermen arrested for defying hilsha ban

Dhaka- Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) arrested five fishermen on charge of catching hilsha defying the government’s 22-day ban that is currently in place.The law enforcers also seized six boats, 10,000 meters of illegal current nets, 5,000 meters Charghera nets and 20 kg hilsha fish from their possessions.The government has imposed a ban on the catching, selling and transportation of mother hilshas from October 1-22, to coincide with its peak breeding season.Acting on a tip-off, an operational team of BCG based in Bhola carried out a raid at Bhelimiah area on the Meghna river under Bhola Sadar thana on Wednesday and made the arrests, said Commander AHM Shamim of Coast Guard Headquarters here.Later, a mobile court led by Bhola Sadar Upazila Executive Magistrate sentenced four of the fishermen to one year’s simple jail and another one was fined Tk 5,000, said Commander AHM Shamim.UNB news agency
