At least 50 people were injured in a sporadic clash between activists of Awami League and BNP at Gopinathpur village in Raipura upazila on Monday.
Police said BNP leader Abdur Rahim and Awami League leader Jaj Mia had long been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in Nilakkhar Char.
As a sequel to the enmity, their supporters clashed on Friday, leaving five people injured. On information, police had brought the situation under control.
However, both groups equipped with lethal weapons and fishing spears attacked each other at about 7am on Monday, triggering a fresh clash.
Later, the clash spilled over into six villages, including Darigaon, Birgaon, Haripur, Amirabad and Shonakanda.
Chases and counter chases took place during the eight-hour melee, leaving 50 injured from the both sides.
Around 100 crude bombs were also exploded during the sporadic clashes.
Later, a team of police comprising 60 members went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Most of the injured were rushed to Nabinagar Upazila Health Complex in Brahmanbaria and other local hospitals fearing police hassle. – UNB
