50,000 people in Morrelganj marooned

At least 50 thousand people of Morrelganj upazila in the district have
been facing untold sufferings for the last one week as they were
marooned due to water logging created for the onrush of the water of
the river Panguchi accompanied with torrential rain.
The sufferers are the inhabitants of Morrelganj pourashava and some
unions of Khawlia, Baharbunia and Morrelganj Sadar situated on the
bank of the rivers Panguchi that separated the upazila into two parts.
No embankment was constructed around the Morrelganj Pourashava for its
protection. On the other hand, there is no well planned drainage
system in it in order to drain out the water from the Poura area.
Water easily enters into the pourashava at the time of high tide. But
it cannot be drained out and same is the case of rain water and
consequently, it (pourashava) becomes the easy victim of water
logging.
It is a regular feature, particularly during the rainy season.  For
the reason mentioned above at present all the roads of the Pourashava
are now under water. The houses and the roads were not constructed
according any planned way. As the houses and roads of many places of
the poura area easily go under knee-deep water.
Due to the onrush of the river Panguchi and accompanied with
torrential rain water logging was created permanently at Adarshpara,
Kuthibari, Launch Ghat, Karmakarpara, KG School road, Uttar Saralia,
Serestadarbari places.
The inhabitants of those areas are to go out of their houses through
knee-deep water regularly. The people of the Office Para are also
marooned with water logging and the official activities became senile.
As a result, people are to move through knee-deep water to perform
their official works.
Majority guardians do not allow their wards to go to the schools and
madrshas. All the educational institutions of the Poura area are
virtually remain closed.
Huge number of kutcha houses have already been damaged and tin sheds
and semi-pucca houses are going to be damaged.
The onrush of the water of the river Panguchi entered into the most of
the shops and business enterprises of the pourashava bazar. As a
result, mercantile good worth several crores taka were fully of
partially damaged.
On the other hand, a large number of shrimps and lobsters farms were
submerged with water and consequently, the owners of the farms
incurred a loss of several crores taka. A road of No.16 Khawlia Union
under the upazila was washed away by the strong current of the river.
As a result, Madhya Barisal, Chalitabunia, Fasiatala, Chipa
Baraikhali, Amtali, Kahwlia villages were inundated with water and
thousand of inhabitants of those villages were marooned. They cannot
go out of their houses.
The day labourers of those villages were thrown out of jobs.
Consequently, they are living in starvation and semi starvation.
