50pc MPs businessmen, 15pc below elementary education

Out of the 350 members of the 10th parliament, 175 MPs are businessmen (50 percent), while 51 MPs lawyers and 21 farmers. Besides, 275 MPs (78.57 percent) are either postgraduates or graduates, while 15 have educational qualification below the SSC, 21 below the HSC and 37 undergraduates. And 128 MPs are postgraduates. Analysing the affidavits of the MPs submitted to the Election Commission during 10th national election, Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan), a non-government organisation, came up with the statistics at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Sunday. Sujan executive members Ali Imam Majumder and Dr Tofail Ahmed, Sujan secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder were present at the press conference, while its central coordinator Dilip Kumar Majumder presented the keynote paper. The annual income of each 55 MPs, including the income of their dependents, is more than one crore each, while that of 17 is less than Tk two lakh. A total of 94 MPs have wealth, including that of their dependents, worth more than Tk five crore each, while 12 others have wealth worth less than Tk five lakh. Out of the 300 MPs elected directly, 258 pay income taxes. – UNB
