7 primary school students killed in Jessore road crash

Jessore – Seven primary school students were killed and 40 others injured as a bus carrying picnickers plunged into a pond at Jhautala in Chaugachha upazila on Jessore-Meherpur Highway on Saturday night.
Officer-in-charge of Chaugachha Police Station Motiur Rahman said the bus carrying students of Benapole Government Primary School tumbled into the pond around 8pm, leaving the seven dead on the spot and 40 others injured.The bus was on its way back to Benapole from Mujibnagar of Meherpur district.  The deceased, including five girls, could not be identified immediately.
Twenty of the injured were taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital  while the rest to Chaugachha Upazila Health Complex. – UNB
bdnews24.com adds: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered a “proper” investigation into the road mishap that killed seven school children on Saturday night while expressing ‘deep’ shock.
At least 50 others were also injured as a picnic bus carrying the school children fell into a roadside pond in Jessore’s Chougacha Upazila after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Hasina, in a message, asked for proper investigation into the accident and also called for punitive action against anyone if found guilty of causing the mishap.
She also prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed her deep sympathy to bereaved parents, teachers, friends and family members of the deceased.
