At least eight vehicles have been torched in Dhaka ahead of the Opposition’s second spell of a nationwide strike starting from Monday.
Fire brigade control room official Nilufar Yasmin said a bus was torched in front of the Motijheel T&T School and College around 10:40am on Sunday.
Another bus was set on fire around two hours later in front of the Tejgaon BSTI office, she said.
“Four fire engines had rushed to the spot and doused the flames,” said Yasmin.
“It is not yet clear who torched the buses,” she said.
The BNP-led 18-Party alliance has called a countrywide 60-hour shutdown to press for a non-party government to supervise the parliament polls.
They had enforced a similar lockdown on Oct 27-29.
Several improvised bombs exploded in front of the Titumir College at Mohakhali around 2pm.
A bus was seen to be on fire in front of the Parjatan hotel, opposite the college, soon after the explosions.
Locals doused the flames before fire engines showed up.
Banani police OC Bhuiyan Mahbub Hossain said the incident was being probed.
Another bus was torched at Gulistan around 2:40pm, followed by another arson attack about an hour later at Kataban.
Fire service control room official Md Ali said firefighting units brought the fire under control.
Miscreants set ablaze a bus used to transport the Sonali Bank officials at around 5pm at Motijheel in front of the bank.
Around 7pm two buses was torched at Baridhara and Pallabi.
Meanwhile, the second war crimes tribunal of Bangladesh sentenced former Al Badr leaders Ashrafuzzaman Khan and Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin to death.
