Dhaka – The 19th anniversary of the signing of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord was observed on Friday with renewed call for full implementation of the landmark deal.Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and different socio-cultural organisations marked the day with various programmes, including discussion and rally.
PCJSS arranged a discussion at a city hotel on the occasion.
Speaking at the programme, PCJSS President Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma, popularly known as Santu Larma, demanded full implementation of the treaty in the interest of the people of CHT. “The deprivation and exploitation in the hill areas have turned acute. So, the CHT treaty will have to be implemented immediately.”
He also threatened that they will go on a tougher programme like hartal and blockade as per their earlier announcement if the peace accord is not implemented.
Different organisations in the three hill districts marked the day in a befitting manner with various programmes.
On December 2, 1997, Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) signed a peace deal with the then Awami League government, led by Sheikh Hasina, ending more than two decades of tribal insurgency and bloodletting in the country’s three hill districts. – UNB
