Dhaka – Attorney General Mahbubey Alam on Sunday described the President’s dialogues with the registered political parties over the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC) as a ‘political solution’.
“It’s a political issue. Though the Constitution gives the President power to exercise in two cases, he can exercise all other functions in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister. As all the political parties expect President’s steps over the EC formation, it should be considered as a political solution,” he said.
The Attorney General was replying to a query from reporters about the legality of the President’s dialogue initiative at his office.
“The President is the symbol of a nation’s unity and our President is very experienced politically. Some persons can play a role in the juncture of a nation even if it’s not written in the Constitution. We hope our President of such personality will play that role,” he said.
The President initiated the formal talks with political parties about the EC formation with holding discussions with BNP on December 18 last year.
He took the dialogue initiative as the tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February. -UNB
