51.20 lakh beneficiaries of social safety net: Nuruzzaman

State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed today said 51.20 lakh beneficiaries, including physically challenged persons, have been brought under social safety net and food security programmes of the government.

“The Ministry of Social Welfare has undertaken various programmes for ensuring social safety and food security of people in the country,” he said while replying to a tabled question from treasury bench member Mahfuzur Rahman of Chittagong-3 in the Jatiya Sangsad.

The state minister said the programmes included old-aged allowance, widow allowance, insolvent disabled allowance and stipend for physically challenged students.

“The National Disabled Development Foundation under the Social Welfare Ministry has established 103 disabled services and help centres in 64 districts and 39 upazila headquarters for providing physiotherapy along with other healthcare services free of cost to physically challenged people,” he said.

Replying to another tabled question from treasury bench member Mamunur Rashid Kiron of Noakhali-3, he said the government has enhanced the number of beneficiaries and allowances to 25 percent in 2016-2017 financial year.

“We have increased the monthly allowance to Taka 600 from Taka 500,” the state minister told the House.
